I'm still probably a bit tipsy. Go out and buy two pairs. I'm just asking if this is a typical situation when hooking the cables up wrong.

That is the third link you need. I got out with a bit of cosmetic damage and he had to replace the fuseable links and a few fuses to get his going again. If your battery is running low that's why you can't start then you have less voltage across it's nodes. I would not think it very likely to have damaged the starter motor, but it's possible some vehicles use a common fusible link for the starter and alternator.
